I took a dear friend to the doctor yesterday. We drove her car (her insistence!), she treated me to lunch (her insistence!), and then she presented me with a tray of cookies she had made and had waiting on me when we returned to her house after the doctor appointment. Now WHO do YOU think blessed Whom yesterday? (I have no idea if I used the who and whom correctly!) I went to be a blessing to her, and she blessed me beyond measure.
My GRANDkids loved the cookies so I had them make a "thank-you" video to send to Joyce. Since my eldest grandson doesn't like to be in pics nor videos and is rarely seen; BUT he consented to be in this one last night, I thought I would post it to let everyone know that Jarrett is alive.

GRATITUDE IS AN ATTITUDE
A Good Picture of Josh in Concert Last Week
Psalm 150:3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet:
You might remember that I didn't get any good pics of Josh in the band concert last Friday night. Brian shared his camera card with me and I was able to capture all of his pics. I loved this one of Josh playing so thought I would share it at this late date. He is the boy on the bottom middle in glasses. The handsome one. :) Double-click on pic for a better view. :)
Isabella's Spring Piano Recital 2008
Psalm 150:4 ... praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
We were so very blessed to attend Isabella's Recital on Tuesday Evening. Here is a "Smilebox" presentation of the video of her performance and about 10 pictures of the evening. Play the video and then click on each picture for it to appear in the larger frame. There are 4 pages of pics in total so look for the arrow button to move to the next page in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. I hope you enjoy!

ONE LAST TOOT FROM JOSH
We went to Josh's first band concert on last Friday night but didn't get a good view of him playing and failed to make a picture of Josh all dressed up for the concert that evening. At lunch on Sunday, I asked Josh if he would mind coming to my house so that I could "interview" him about the concert. He came and I made a video of Josh and his trumpet. I guess this will be our "last toot" for this school year. Josh seems to have some natural talent so I hope he will practice this summer and keep up what he has learned this semester in his trumpet lessons. And now, here's Josh.....

Josh In His First Band Concert Last Night!
What a joy to watch our GRANDchildren grow up. Josh turned nine last week and is completing the 3rd grade. He has a big heart and is a great kid. We are so very proud of our middle grandson for many reasons, and last night we were proud of Josh, the band member!
In January, Josh began taking trumpet lessons at school and then about a month ago, all of the different beginning 3rd grade band members came together as a group. Last night they played two songs in the Grades 3-8 Awards Concert. Amy was the emcee for the concert. We heard the Cadet Band (grades 6-8 and they were as good as any high school band I have ever heard), Tonettes (4th grade singers), Harps (grades 3-7), Beginning Orchestra (grades 5-7), Jaffe Orchestra (grades 4-8), Third Grade Band (Josh's group!), Elementary Band (grades 4-5), Patriot Singers (grades 5-6), and the Intermediate Orchestra (grades 4-7).
Of course, I tried to make some video of Josh playing and of Amy emceeing. It turned out horrible. We were too far back, Josh wasn't high on the risers, and it just wasn't a good situation for filming. But, I got a video (IT IS CURRENTLY UPLOADING ON YOUTUBE) and you can at least hear the band. When the video is posted here, Josh is on the front row far right~~ and is the first dark-haired boy. Amy was the emcee of the program and did a super job.
After hearing all of the excellent bands, orchestras, harps, choirs, and the giving out of awards, all of the musicians (327 of them representing grades 3-8 at the Academy) came together for the grade finale to play/sing a wonderful patriotic medley. I got the last word of it ("forever" in Stars and Stripes) and you can see Josh kind of in the middle of all the white shirts ~~ in front of the boy wih the prominent bowtie. It was a GREAT evening, and we look forward to watching Josh progress with his trumpeteering!!

"Resting in God's Love" by Baby Lily's Maternal Grandmother, Rhonda
Song of Solomon 2:12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
Rhonda (in the red dress) and her family: Front Row L-R: Daughter Pam holding Baby Ellie, Rhonda, Dawn (expecting Lily) holding Little Luke, Rhonda's mother, Jean. Back Row L-R: Pam's husband Casey, Dawn's husband Josh, Rhonda's husband Dan, and Rhonda's son, Danny. (Double-click on any pic to enlarge for better viewing.) And now from Rhonda.....
Dear Prayer Warriors,
Let me share my heart with you for a minute. I spent the night with Dawn and Josh last Saturday and Sunday and took care of (2-month-old) Lily so that they could get a good night's rest.
(Picture is of Josh and Dawn with Luke and Lily.)
Early Saturday morning I had asked God for a special promise. I was holding Lily closely and looking out the livingroom window. It was about 6:30 a.m. I noticed a birdhouse on the backyard fence. A mommy bird and daddy bird were making visits in and out of the birdhouse, feeding their young. God reminded me of the song "His Eye is on the Sparrow." It is one of my favorite songs; Dawn has sung it a few times in church. It wasn't long before Josh and Luke joined me in the livingroom. We were quietly waiting for Dawn to wake up. I mentioned my thoughts to Josh as we sat there looking out the window watching the birds.
Later that same day Dawn was checking her email and mentioned she had a really sweet one from George (a friend from church) . As she read it to us, he too was conveying the exact same assurance and comfort to Dawn that the Lord had given me earlier that morning. A couple of the verses follow:
Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
Matthew 6:26 "Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"
Lily is precious in God's sight. She is under His wings and nothing can happen to her without His knowledge. I am clinging to the promise that He is watching over her! Another verse I love is Psalm 91:4 "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust."
Keep praying on Lily's behalf. Pray the surgeon will be able to remove the whole tumor (on Tuesday, April 29). Pray for total healing from this cancer. Pray for Dawn and Josh to be strengthened, encouraged and comforted in God's love. Pray for Luke as he will be separated from his parents for much of next week. And please keep praying for the other family members as well.
Resting in God's love,
Rhonda

FLIPPING OUT!!!!!!!!!!
Grandpa Richard and I heard voices and laughter out in the front yard and looking out the window, we saw that the GRANDkids were home from school and doing flips. A friend of the family had arrived to have dinner with them; and Jarrett, being a typical almost-15-year-old guy, was eager to "show off." Amy's friend had fun showing the kids her gymnastic abilities so they all had fun and then were good and ready for dinner when Amy called them in ~~ but not before I stepped out on our front porch to make a quick video of the fun! Otobeyoungagain!!!
P.S. I cautioned Josh not to be flipping around in his dress pants (he had dress rehearsal this afternoon for his band concert tomorrow night and was still in his concert clothes) but wasn't paying attention that Belle had on her school clothes (a skirt.) OOPS!!!!!!!!!

Oh Be Careful, BIG Feet, Where You Go
Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Today was my play-day with my 3-1/2 year-old grandson. Jaden is very articulate, very active, and lots of fun for me. I enjoy our conversations and our activities. As is our custom on Wednesdays, we had a fun morning playing outside. He rode his bike, played basketball, swung (boy that sounds weird), played kickpen with Granny, and ran around. We were both worn out when it was time to come in for lunch.
As we came into the sunroom from outside, I quickly kicked off my shoes so that I could wash up and start our lunch. Jaden was playing around with some toys out there so I told him to take off his shoes and come on into the house in a few minutes. He obeyed and was soon inside washing up for lunch.
After lunch we watched a video, got his bath, and read his bedtime story for nap-time. When he woke up at 4:00, it was time to get dressed for Grandpa to come get us to take us away... to take Jaden to his Mom at the Academy... blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the last thing I had to do was to remember where in the world Jaden's shoes could be found. Oh yeah.... I had told him to leave them in the sunroom before he came in for lunch. I went out to the sunroom to get them while Jaden was putting on his jeans and socks. Here is what I found....Now, this picture may not mean a thing to you, but finding our shoes in this pattern brought tears to my eyes. To me, it was Jaden expressing his enjoyment of our playtime, and his delight in obeying and leaving his shoes in the sunroom. The shoes were a POTENT SPIRITUAL REMINDER to me that this little boy~~ my GRANDchild~~ is watching what I do and is following my example ~~ at least on Wednesdays. I bowed my head and begged God to help me always set a good example for Jaden.... to live before him with evidence of the Fruit of the Spirit operating in my life (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, and meekness); and to show Jaden my love and attention without spoiling him (may be too late for that one). I desire to always to be an example of how a Christian should conduct oneself. I pray that as Jaden watches me and emulates me on occasion that I will never be a stumbling block to him~~ mislead him.

Monday (4/21/08) Update on Baby Lily

Earlier today, Rhonda (Lily's maternal grandmother) sent out several pictures of 2-month-old Lily that were made on Sunday. Isn't she precious? This afternoon, I received word from Rhonda after Lily's appointment at Children's Hospital today. I post Rhonda's update on Lily and her neuroblastoma cancer situation as a praise to our Lord Jesus Christ:
Thank you for all the prayers. We have a praise. The blood work looks good. The bone scan looks normal. Surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday morning (4/29), so the surgeon has time to thoroughly study the tests. She is going to try to get all the tumor out. If that is the case, Lily won't need chemotherapy. It will be a five-hour surgery. The oncologist's name is Dr. Pressley. The surgeon is a woman, Dr. Jackie Sato.
Lily, Dawn and Josh are on their way home. Keep praying for that miracle.

Prayer Request for Baby Lily
Lily at 3 weeks old...
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Baby Lily needs our prayers. So do her parents, Josh and Dawn. So do her grandparents: Johnny & Cathy and Dan & Rhonda. So does her big (2-year-old) brother Luke. So do her great- grandmothers. So do her aunts, uncles, and cousins. And so do the many friends who love Lily and her precious family on both sides.
Our hearts are broken today as we receive the news that 2-month old Lily has cancer. Dawn took Lily to the doctor on Friday (4/18/08) for her regular 2-month well-baby check-up. The pediatrician, upon routine examination, felt a mass in Lily's abdomen. He immediately arranged for Lily to go to the hospital and have an ultra-sound on Friday afternoon. It confirmed the mass and they were immediately sent to Birmingham to Children's Hospital for tests. Today, their world has been turned upside down. Here is the prayer chain email I received:
Rhonda called and confirmed that Lily does have cancer. She has what they call Neuroblastoma. The doctor is pretty optimistic that this is treatable. The Dr says she has a 90% chance of recovery due to her age and early discovery. Lily will have to have other scans to determine what stage the cancer is in and how it has progressed to determine treatment. She may have to start Chemo. They will be coming home for the weekend then back to the hospital on Monday. If you are able to fast and pray the rest of the day please do so. Pray for strength for Josh, Dawn and all the family that God will give them what they need to make it through this difficult time. I will keep updates coming as they are available. As a friend, I am shocked, heartbroken, numb. Though it feels like the world has been turned upside down, I have precious faith in our Lord Jesus Christ that He is working His will in Lily's life. I don't understand it and I don't like it, but that doesn't change the fact that I can~~ and will~~ trust God in this matter. As I trust Him, I can pray, fast, and pray some more. I won't quit praying for Lily and for her family. Would you please lift them up in prayer today, through the weekend, and all of next week as Lily undergoes further tests which will determine the course of treatment? If you would like to receive prayer chain updates on Lily, please email me and I will be glad to add you to my list. My email is long4heaven@cox.net.
God, bless Little Lily and hold her close. May her family feel your presence as never before as they trust in you.

Three Guests from Ohio and One Bama Girl Here This Weekend
We have four sweet and lovely guests this weekend. Our former campus daughter, Morgann, is down visiting and brought 2 friends from her church with her. They stopped in Alabama and picked up a friend. Two of the girls here with Morgann are alumni of the college, and the 3rd friend is considering coming to college. We fixed breakfast for them and now they are gone for the day: the beach, shopping, hanging out at the college, eating and fellowshipping. We were forecasted up through last night to have a rainy/stormy Saturday which I knew would put a real damper on their day. Guess what!!! It stormed at 2:00 a.m. and is a bright and gorgeous day in NW Florida for our Buckeye Girls. God is good!!! Here are a couple of pics. One was made at breakfast and the other was made when the girls were headed out for their day.

Bandit and the Bird
At about 6:15 on Thursday morning, as I was coming out the kitchen to prepare our breakfast, I heard an awful racket. I honestly didn't know what it was but knew it was coming from outside. I raised the kitchen window blind and there sat Bandit on the window ledge as is his normal custom. I still heard that awful racket, and it wasn't coming from Bandit. A movement on the sunroom gutter caught me eye. There was a big bird ~~ squawking and fussing at Bandit. I guess it is a mother bird and she must have a nest up there gutter. I need to get Richard up there to check on that today. Anyway, it was the same scenario when I came out to the kitchen this morning. I rolled up by blind, and there sat Bandit on the window ledge and the bird on top of the gutter fussing her little heart out. I got my camera, raised the window and videoed "Bandit and the bird." I love to watch God's creation acting out their instincts.

My Life in Dot-2-Dot
James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Back to the dot-2-dot. It was exciting when he brought his completed picture to me. Signed, sealed, and delivered!! Grandma was mighty excited and Jaden was mighty proud. We are a great combination. HA!!
I got to thinking about it last night after church. Jaden's dot-2-dot picture caused me to think about my life (56-3/4 years) and the dot-2-dots that have brought me thus far. Most of them have been God-made and some of them have been Susan-drawn. This thought kind of stayed with me through the night as I pondered my life (I am learning that growing older brings about a lot of reflecting!) as to where I have been and where I am going.
Dot-2-dot....
1. Born on July 8, 1951. The 2nd surviving daughter of Byron and Arlene Meyer. I came home to a precious big sister 6-1/2 years my senior. What a sweet, faithful, and loving sister Karen has been all through my life. I don't know what I would do without her! Mom lost 2 babies in-between Karen and me ~~ hence the age -difference. It intrigues me that I have a sister and a brother in Heaven. I can't wait to meet them someday.
2. My baby sister, Sonja (nicknamed Nonie by me) was born 15 months later. I had to give up the baby-status real early in life. I was too young to be jealous so that was a good thing. Nonie and I were very different in temperament but very close as sisters. I love my little sister dearly and don't know what I would do without her either!!
3. 1961. Our family left my hometown when I was in the 5th grade and moved just 30 miles away. Of course to me, it felt like we moved around the world as I left the only home, school, church and life-long friends I had ever known. We moved there for our folks to buy and operate two restaurants: a cafe as well as a "burger joint." Perhaps food became the focus of our family life.... because for some reason, I found that food was my solace as I made the transition of making new friends, etc. It was during those important years of finishing elementary school and entering junior high that I became overweight. I learned a very bad habit of "emotional" eating that has plagued me for the rest of my life. I believe the name of the little town we moved to (Gordo) means "fat" in Spanish. Oh dear!!
4. 1966. We moved back to T-County (Cottondale) just 5 years later. I entered 10th grade at Brookwood High School and completed school there. I made new friends, was in the band, etc. but knew that something was missing from my life. We had been Methodist all of my life and were active church members. I don't recall EVER hearing the "Gospel in a nutshell" that I was a sinner nor that Christ died on the cross for MY sins. Church was basically a fun place to meet up with my friends.
5. 1968. As a high-schooler, my parents decided to join a different church in town ~~ a Free Will Baptist Church. It was there that I finally heard the Gospel and learned of my need of a Savior. At age 15, I went forward and made a profession of faith and soon baptism followed.
6. It was during this time, that my 50-year-old father answered God's call to preach. All of a sudden, I am a PK ~~ preacher's kid
7. 1969. After graduation from high school, I went to "Trade School" in town and completed the "Secretarial/Stenographer" course. My first job after graduation was with a law firm in town.
8. During those couple of years in school, I made a great friend in Wanda Turner. We decided to get an apartment and live out on our own. That didn't last too long for I think it was our first month in the apartment that she met the love of her life and in a few months got married. I moved back home. In the meantime, I had changed jobs and was a secretary at the "Paper Company" in town.
9. 1971. My dad became the pastor of a little church out in the county, but I stayed at our "home church" near our home as I was very active there. One Sunday, my parents came home from church, and my mom told me about this nice young man who had just come back from his stint in the U.S. Army.
Soon thereafter, my pastor was scheduled to preach a week of revival at my dad's church. Being a faithful church member and a faithful daughter, I attended revival at my dad's church that week. It was that week that I met that "nice young man."
10. Richard proposed in December 1972 and we were wed in September 1973. I was 22 and Richard was 26. He was a fine Christian man and we had a good start to our marriage.
11. April 1974. Richard lands a great job in T-Town. Actually, when we married he had a real good job with Arthur Andersen in Birmingham, but the weekly travels of being an auditor wasn't for us. We were thankful when he got the local job at GSPC.
12. In December 1975, our daughter Amy was born. What a joy to become a mother to a precious baby. Marriage and motherhood. I had found my niche!!
13. In January 1978, our son Charles Richard II (Chip) was born. Two children. A girl and a boy. We were tricked by the devil into believing that our family was complete. I had my tubes tied 2 years later. It is my belief that a Christian couple should have as many children as the Lord sends their way. I wish I had had at least 4 or 5 children!!
14. In 1981, we left the Free Will Baptist Church and joined the Independent Baptist Church where our daughter Amy was in the 1st grade. We grew and grew and grew spiritually in that great ministry and served there for 20 years. I worked in the church office for a number of years and then our last 8 years there, I worked in the office at our Christian school.
15. In June 1986, my precious and beloved Daddy was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Dad lived for 3 weeks and died on June 26, 1986 while undergoing treatment. This was the first true test of my faith, and I found my LORD to be so very faithful even during those days I was so full of grief. I KNOW I shall see my Daddy again ~~ as soon as I arrive in Heaven.
16. Amy graduated high school in 1993 and attended a Christian College. Chip graduated high school in 1996 and attended his freshman year at that same college. His freshman year was Amy's senior year. Our hearts became knit with the college and the ministry connected with it.
17. In August 1997, following her May graduation from college, Amy married her college sweetheart. We gained a fine son-in-law.
18. Chip came back home after his first year of college and attended a local junior college near home. It was during those semesters at home when the Lord called him to full-time ministry. He left us in January 1999 to attend Bible College in Clarks Summit, PA.
19. My beloved Mother grew very ill with congestive heart failure. It finally claimed her life on July 13, 1999, less than one week after we had to put her in a nursing home. It was a very difficult time in losing her, but our hope was in knowing that she was safely arrived in Heaven, reunited with Daddy, and breathing God's best air up there. I know I will see her again and look forward to that glad reunion day!
20. Chip graduated from BBC in May 2001 and moved to Detroit, MI for a year's intern in a church there. Brian and Amy traveled to Ukraine to adopt our first two grandchildren in June 2001. Isabella was 6 and Josh was 26 months. We all know what happened on September 11, 2001.
21. After much prayer and seeking God's will, Richard and I put our house on the market in October 2001. If it sold, we would love "down here." Our house sold miraculously fast and we moved to Florida on December 1, 2002. We lived with Brian, Amy, Isabella, and Josh for 6 months as the house we thought we were buying fell through and we ended up building. We joined a great church year and flourished under the sound preaching.
22. During the early-on of our building process, Brian and Amy decided to sell their house and build next door to us. We moved into our new home on 5/31/02 and they moved in next-door just 6 weeks later.
23. In August 2002, my precious mother-in-law took off for Heaven. We knew she was much better off but grieved for our dear "Daddy Dean" who was blind and left alone in their nursing home room. Daddy Dean's faith was strong and he did his best to carry on.
24. Chip completed his year internship at the church in Detroit during which time he felt the Lord was calling him to attend Seminary in Louisville, KY and get his M-Div. We were thrilled for him and enjoyed our trips there to visit him. He was called to be a part-time youth pastor at a sweet little church in Lanesville, IN.
25. In June 2003, Brian, Amy, Isabella and Josh returned to Ukraine to adopt Isabella's older brother, Jarrett. He was 10 years old at the time of his adoption.
26. In early March of 2004, Brian and Amy announced that they were going to have a baby. That was a very happy day and gave us much anticipation for the next 8 months!!
27. April 19, 2004~~ Richard's Dad passed very unexpectedly. Richard received the call at work and we took off for home. We were heartbroken but knew his Dad had lived a victorious Christian live through Christ and that he was glad to be home with God and with his dear Clara in Heaven for all eternity. In my emotional-way of thinking, I hoped Daddy Dean had caught up my parents on Amy and Chip, on our 3 grandchildren whom he had met, and had told my mom and Richard's mom that Amy was expecting! We were now without any parents, and that was a strange feeling. We had become the oldest generation with a third generation coming on behind us.
28. Amy gave birth to a beautiful red-head boy on November 2, 2004~~ the artist and master dot-to-dot boy as depicted in the picture above.
29. In Spring 2006, I learned that my extra weight had finally caught up with me and that I would now battle high blood pressure and high triglycerides. I am put on long-term medicine for the first time in my 54 years!!
30. November 2007. Chip is called back to "Sweet Home Alabama" and is the Student and College Ministries Pastor at a great church in the Huntsville area. It is a blessing to be able to see him more often!
31. April 2008. After much prayer and seeking God's will, Richard is about to retire for the 2nd time. We will celebrate his May 5th retirement with a 2-week trip to Alaska next month.
Summary of my dot-2-dots thus far... I have had a blessed life with a faithful husband, two great "kids" who are both in full-time Christian service, a precious son-in-law, 4 God-given grandchildren, a loving extended family on both sides, great friends, and a faithful Heavenly Father who has walked with me each step of the way. He has reached down to pick me up many times when I have stumbled, crashed, and even willfully stepped out of His will.
??. What does the future hold? Where will the next "dot" take me? As we get ready for Richard's retirement in two weeks, we know we have to stay anchored and active in the Lord, seek His will, and finish our lives strong in Him. I can't wait to see what the next dots hold for us but realize that some of them may be hard. Aging, health that could fail, siblings that are in their mid-60s, the tumultuous teenage-years for 2 of our grandchildren, the totally unexpected for any of our loved ones.... who knows what all lies out there before us~~ the "good" as well as the "bad?" GOD DOES. I will trust Him day by day and walk with Him along the rest of this life's way. I'm thankful to know what lies at the end of this path: Eternity in Heaven!!!

Happy 13th Birthday, Dear Isabella
I feed the family every Monday night, so I made it our birthday dinner for Isabella. I asked her for the menu and we had stuffed bell peppers, corn on the cob, broccoli slaw, mashed potatoes, and garlic bread (that made for too many starches, but HEY, it was her 13th birthday dinner!). I had a bowl of fresh fruit (cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes) and discovered it still in the fridge after they had gone home last night! It's "fun" to have those senior moments.) We had birthday cake. Isabella wanted chocolate so we had chocolate. BUT, Richard can't eat chocolate at night, so we had a white cake as well. Belle enjoyed her gifts from us and her Uncle Chip.
And this morning she has awakened to her teenage years. Oh how I pray for that precious sweet girl that she will stay close to God, pure, and sweet. If she will stay grounded in The Word, retain her obedient spirit toward her parents and trust them when they have to say, "no," she will get through these next 7 years just fine. For sure, her Grandma will be praying her through them as long as I have my right mind!
Happy Birthday, Belle, and many, many more!
And now some pics from last night's fun celebration of Miss Isabella....

It's Birthday Week In the Cul-De-Sac!
We didn't have the blessing of receiving the news from Amy and Brian that they were "expecting. We didn't get to experience Amy "carrying" her first two children. We didn't receive the phone calls that she was "in labor" and headed to the hospital. We didn't know Isabella nor Josh as infants. I didn't get to rock my two grandchildren as babies, give them their bottles nor burp them. I never changed Isabella's diaper. We didn't hear their first coos, watch them learn to sit, pull-up, crawl, or walk. We didn't see their first tooth erupt. We missed out all of that for both Isabella and Josh. Some may be asking, "Why, where were you during those years???"
It's not where we were. It's where they were. Isabella and Josh are both Ukrainian by birth. Their life story is that they were adopted in Ukraine by Brian and Amy in June 2001. Isabella was 6 at the time of her adoption and Josh was almost 26 months old. The picture at the top of this article was made at the airport when we first met them. We had never laid eyes on our GRANDchildren until that moment. All I can say with every ounce of my being is that I could not LOVE THEM ONE IOTA MORE than what I do. They have enriched our lives beyond measure. We love them. They are God's special blessing to us.
Right after the kids were adopted nearly seven years ago, I remember Amy telling me that she and Brian pray for the salvation of Belle's and Josh's bio-parents so they can meet Belle and Josh in Heaven and see what great kids they had given birth (and life) to. I remember crying buckets of tears when Amy told me their perpetual prayer because I realized the prayer was born from the heart of a true mother and a true dad who would pray that for their children. It was the mark of true Christian love on their part. I pray that someone has gotten to both Isabella's and Josh's parents with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that they have been born again. If that transaction hasn't occurred yet, I pray that they will be reached with the good news of God's gift of salvation before it is too late.
Happy Birthday Week to my dear Isabella and Joshua. May you always know how much Grandpa and Grandma Dean love you and thank God for you. Happy Birthday and MANY more!!
Love,
Grandma

There Last Friday But Gone This Friday
Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
I help conduct a Bible Study every Friday morning at a local retirement center. The girls I work with are dear friends and the people to whom we minister become precious friends. The sad part of our ministry there is getting to know and love the residents and then losing them to death. I imagine we have lost some 20 friends in the years we have been conducting this ministry.
Today was one of those days. I knocked on the door of sweet Jean's room and then someone walking by told me she had passed on Monday. Just last Friday I pushed Jean in her wheelchair to the Bible Study. She was a very young 81-year-old and so witty and vivacious ~~ but suffering with emphasema. We laughed every week because at the same time on the dot of every Bible lesson, her cell phone would ring, she would dig it out of her purse, and "stage" whisper to the person on the other end that she was in "church" and would call back later. It was a blessing to know that one of her family members or perhaps a close friend was so faithful to make that Friday morning call. They didn't need to make that call today.
Jean confessed to know Christ as Savior so we know where she was when it was time for Bible Study this morning. Her place was empty and we missed her but rejoiced to know that she is with JESUS CHRIST and is enjoying the benefits of Heaven.
Her obituary is in today's newspaper. I want to post it in loving memory of Jean, but I will leave out names of people and towns in order to protect the privacy of her family. Jean, I'll see you one of these Fridays~~~ up there!!!
JEAN
1926-2008
Born October 29, 1926, in Dothan, AL, Jean was the youngest of nine children, five brothers and three sisters. Her mother died due to complications of childbirth and she was raised by her eldest sister, Helen. With the family split between relatives, they grew closer and loved each other even more.
Jean played basketball for Malvern School in Slocomb, AL. She married young and spent her life in love with Edgar who preceded her in death in 1994. She returned to school in the 1960's and earned her Bachelors Degree at U.W.F. and taught elementary school for 13 years.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas and his wife, Alice; Steven and his wife, Debbie. Also, grandchildren, who she loved very much, Dana and husband, Cliff; Aaron and wife, Natalie; and Travis.
Jean was always a gracious hostess to her many friends and family. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, quilting, painting, crocheting and knitting. She was an active member and loved attending her Baptist Church.
After moving to the retirement center, she attended church services there and took part in all their many activities. The entire family would like to thank the caring staff of the retirement center and of Hospice. We truly do appreciate everything.

I'm a Perfume-Aholic....My Name is "Self"
I received this from an online friend today. It is her testimony of how God is working in her life. It was so good that I asked if I could post it on my blog. This is from "Brightfaith"............
I’m a Perfume-Aholic…..My Name is ‘Self’
It’s ok if you laugh while you read this (Kathy). The absurdity of my experience may move you to laughter, or it may move you to tears. I have experienced laughter and tears, joy and sorrow over what I am about to share with you. And I must tell you that this is one of the strangest experiences I have had to date….it is strange and amazing.
On May 19th, 2008 I will have been a born again Christian for 21 years. I remember clearly the day that I gave my heart and life to Jesus, to do with, to build with, to use as He pleases. Of course I was just certain that He would give to me the gift of ‘healing’. How I longed to have that miraculous gift. To think that He would use my hands to bring health and wellness to the suffering, the sick or the dying would fill my heart with joy. I pleaded with Him to anoint me thusly, confident that He would not refuse such a sincere request. But, He did. Well, not entirely. He did use me once in a miraculous way to help save a life. And once He used me to help heal a cat of mine that I was sure would die, but both of those stories are for another time. The Lord in His wisdom decided that I would serve Him better if I would be a ‘prayer warrior’ and that I would be of greater use to Him if I could learn simple obedience.
According to Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, obedient means: submissive to the restraint or command of authority. As you may be guessing, especially if you have known me for any substantial length of time, we’re already on dangerous ground. If my grandmother were still alive she would be able to pass an afternoon or 2 with you telling you stories (all true) of how headstrong and willful I could be. Thankfully maturity has mellowed me quite a bit though, and I am not as difficult to rein in as I once was. In fact I have learned that the ‘rules’ are in fact my friends. Rules are a necessary, though often times, unpleasant part of life. Without rules and/or laws, where would we be as a society? What side of the road would we drive on or would we even drive on the road? We’d just show up at work whenever we wanted to, wearing whatever we felt like. When would the stores be open? Without rules we wouldn’t need the police and we could just do as we please, steal this thing or shoot that person over there. Yes, rules and laws are mostly good and necessary. They are set in place to protect us and bring order to our lives. Not unlike the Ten Commandments, although I do think God might have worded them in a more positive fashion…..instead of ‘Thou Shalt Not’s’ , we could have the ‘Thou Shalt’s’….We would have ‘Thou shalt tell the truth’ and ‘Thou shalt be faithful to thy spouse’….but that is not the purpose of my writing to you now.
So there I was, a brand new Christian, eager to serve the Lord in a miraculous way, and all He wanted from me was to pray fervently for others and be obedient. I will confess that I thought this a simple and disappointing assignment. As you might well be imagining I am still working on this assignment 21 years later. Some days I do better than others, and some times I am still slow to learn the lesson at hand.
Let me ask you a question. How much are you willing to give up to be of use to the Lord? If you’re anything like me, you didn’t hesitate in your answer, which was most likely, ‘Whatever He wants’. Really? Are you sure? Maybe you’d like to take a minute or two and really think about it. No? Would you let a homeless person come into your home and use your spare bedroom? How much of your savings would you give away to a family in need? What if you knew of someone that could use one of your kidneys? If you were pregnant with your fourth or fifth child, would you give that baby away to a young couple that desperately wanted a child and couldn’t have one? Would you spend your vacation in a Third World country tending to the sick and dying? Tough questions. No easy answers. I have found that God hasn’t asked me to make those difficult decisions. His requests of me are more along the lines of saying no to ‘self’ and saying yes to ‘Him’.
Recently I was blessed with a position in ER Admitting at our local hospital. Not only does my new job come with better pay, and better benefits, it offers me a chance to serve the Lord in ways that on a daily basis really can make a difference in someone’s life. I can help our patient’s to receive timely emergency care, and offer support and comfort to frightened family members, or the patient. I have the opportunity to really be the hands of Christ, in small but not insignificant ways. Awesome.
And then ‘self’ reared its ugly, selfish head, threatening to rob me of this great opportunity, and in a way so absurd that I am embarrassed to share it with you. My dad tells me that confession is good for the soul, and so the story will be told.
I was told in orientation that we are not to wear perfume or body lotions with strong scents. Certainly this did not pertain to ME, I mean I only work in Admitting. So I began my new job with zest and enthusiasm. I dressed each day with care, arrived early for my shift, drenched in my favorite Estee Lauder perfume, Spellbound. My supervisor, after not too many days told me I couldn’t wear my perfume. “But you always smell lovely” I said to her. She says “It’s body lotion”. Being who I am I set out immediately to locate Spellbound body lotion. Nope. None. They aren’t making it anymore I hear from Dillard’s and Macy’s. And the nice Estee Lauder sales lady shares with me the newest scent, ‘Bronze Goddess’, which smells marvelous and I make a purchase. Of course, being the recovering alcoholic that I am, I want 2. She has only 1. So, off to Macy’s I go to get another one. Then I am told that I cannot wear this one either. Well, being the self-ish person that I am, I decide to spray my lightweight coat with my heavy weight perfume, that way I can at least smell good sometimes. And disaster…it triggers an asthma attack in a co-worker! My supervisor tells me to go get my jacket. She doesn’t yell at me, or give me nasty looks. You’d think that would’ve done the trick for me, but nooooo……a couple of days later, after all the day people leave, I decide that I haven’t tried wearing Estee Lauder’s ‘Intuition’…..that, in my mind, is the solution….a different scent. In my make-up bag I have a little bottle of the Intuition, and I decide that I will just use a little, teeny tiny dab behind each ear…..but I don’t want to get it on my hands, because it will end up on the computer keyboard and the phone, so I carefully hold the bottle up by my earlobe and I gently tip it, and it spills down my neck!! Do I have the good sense to go immediately and try to wash it off? Nooooooo…….I don’t even think that it will be a problem. But it was of course, and this time for a lady who had brought her elderly mother to the ER. I grab alcohol wipes (we have big ones in the ER) and start scrubbing. No good. Then I remember I have clothes in the back of my car for the Goodwill. I run out and change my top. Still no good. So I go in and ask the person training me if I should just go home, all the while sitting there scrubbing away with the alcohol wipes and crying. He says “Maybe you’d better Susan, and you’re all red from those wipes, you can’t keep doing that”. “I don’t care, I don’t want to hurt anyone and I don’t want to get fired” is my response. So off I go with tears in my eyes and an alcohol wipe in my hand.
On the ride home I am sick to my stomach, filled with a sense of dread and fear. And then I hear the Lord ask me…..”Will you give up your perfume so that I can use you?” “Of course I will Lord” but my fear remains and I am certain that my new job is lost.
When I got home I called my best friend and told her all of this absurd experience. I have NEVER in my life had so much trouble over perfume. All my years as a Dental Assistant I not once had anything like this happen. It was just too strange for me to get my mind around it. She and I talked and she prayed.
After our conversation ended my mind still tried to make sense of it all. I talked to the Lord …..and I listened. He spoke. He told me that the hospital was where people are born…..very often where they come to die…..they come there to fight for their lives……..they come there when they have a need and they don’t know where else to go for help…..they come there to for all kinds of reasons. I suddenly saw the hospital as holy ground. A sacred place. Jesus asked me again, “Will you give up your perfume so that I can use you Susan?” Of course my answer was “Yes Lord, yes”.
I will ask you again, how much are you willing to give up to be of use to the Lord? Would you give up your perfume? Will you give up your high heels? Chocolate? Working 14 hours a day? Shopping? Golf? Will you give up something that really is part of your ‘self’, something that really defines you to you? Will you say no to ‘self’ and yes to the Lord?
You may think that giving up my perfume would be a snap…..I did. Now as I am getting ready to go to work, at the hospital, I find myself reaching for my Spellbound out of ritual….it is something that is part of my daily preparation. I stop. It is my prayer that God will anoint me with His Heavenly scent….the scent of forgiveness, hope, grace, mercy, and most of all love. I want to walk so closely with the Lord that when I draw near to a patient or one of their family members, they will smell Jesus on me.
My friend Kathy and I laugh at this whole thing, how the Lord will ask us to be obedient in ways that we would never think mattered. I am hoping He doesn’t ask me to give up bleaching my hair, or tweezing out the hairs that regularily appear on my chin (much to my dismay)…..I am hoping He will continue to allow me to wear eyeliner and lipstick…..and I am hoping that if He does ask me to give up those things that I will be able to lay them down too.
Twenty-one years into my walk with the Lord I am still working on obedience, apparently no small task for someone as ‘self-ish’ as I am. And I am still learning that He can only use those that are obedient. Like I said in the beginning of this letter, some days I do better than others. This entire experience of giving up my perfume is really an opportunity to go to the next level spiritually. I don’t know what that will be, but I am excited to see what the Lord will do.
I am reminded of a Janis Joplin song, ‘Take Another Little Piece of My Heart’.Here is my heart Jesus…..take it all, make it Your own…. one piece at a time.
P.S.
Today I returned the second bottle of ‘Bronze Goddess’ body lotion, I don’t need it. One bottle is going to last a long time since I am only wearing perfume on the weekends now!

Buds, Blooms and Blogs
Song of Solomon 2:12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
One of my favorite blogs to visit is that of my friend, Robin F. She was a "real-time" friend several years ago when she and Kerry and their two children were in the same church with us. Eventually, they moved. We reconnected online some years ago; and when the blog thing took off, Robin's was one of the first blogs that I visited and bookmarked to be able to visit regularly.
I was intrigued by Robin's blog. She does a super job with her photography and gardening and blends her two talents to make a beautiful blog page. (Here is her URL if you would like to check it out: http://robinsnestingplace.blogspot.com/)
I began to wonder if I could do some blogging but quickly remembered that I am not a master gardener and don't do much bird-watching as does my friend Robin. What if I could do a blog but focus on my family and friends? I guess I am a "people-person" and enjoy keeping up with what is going on in the lives of others. Boy, that sounds like I'm a real snoop or a gossip. I pray that I am never neither. Honestly, I enjoy focusing on God's blessings and sharing in the joys of people's lives. Of course, at times as family or friend, I am called upon to share in trials and sorrows and to enter into the prayer closet on behalf of others. So I sat down one day and started my blog. (Thank Goodness Google's blogspot makes it easy to do!) I think I started my blog last June so have now been blogging for about 9 months. I have enjoyed it and find this to be my favorite hobby of late.
Well, Robin's pictures of her lovely yard, flourishing flowers, darling dog, cute cat, pretty birds, etc. continue to intrigue me. Because I have enjoyed the springtime buds and blooms in our yard this year, I decided to try my hand at making a picture or two of what is going out there. I post these as a praise to God for the beauty of his creation. Thank you, JESUS!!!
Hey Robin~~ please don't feel threatened by my bit of outdoor photography on today's blog entry. :) You are my forever blogger and photography hero, and I am eternally grateful that your blog inspired me to try my hand at this.
(Pssssst.... she signed my guestbook at the top of this page. You can see what a lovely girl she is!)
Lorapetlum bushes are in full and glorious bloom ~~ their "common name" is Chinese Fringe.
Buds, blooms, and new leaves on the Bradford pear trees.
About to bloom and already bloomed amaryllis
Indian Hawthorne blooms are about done as Japanese Maple Tree is leafing out (below)
Time-honored favorite azaleas are just about done in the back. Yet to bloom in the front.

What's Going to Happen???
My three-year-old grandson Jaden is quite the thinker. His newest question when pondering a task or activity: "What's going to happen?" A couple of weeks ago, he and I were on our way to somewhere in the car. I told him to keep his seatbelt buckled while we were driving. "If I don't do that, what's going to happen?" I had to explain (again!) that if we were to have a wreck, he could get badly injured. And I also told him that it is the law to wear a seatbelt. If I police man noticed that he wasn't buckled in, he would stop us. "If a policeman stops us, what's going to happen?" When I tell him to go potty, "If I don't, whats is going to happen?" I explain that if he waits too long, he will end up wetting his pants. Last evening, I saw Jaden for a minute after school and told him that he can help Grandma do laundry tomorrow when he stays with me. "If you don't do laundry, what's going to happen?" I told him that Grandma and Grandpa would run out of clean clothes!!
I don't think Jaden is questioning authority but is learning to think: what WILL happen if we do this or if he doesn't do that? That's not a bad thing!
This child has set my mind to whirling with his question: "What's going to happen?"
Consequences: a result of one's actions. Have you heard Barack Obama's statement about his two little girls and : "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. . . ." I'm not sure if he was talking about sex education, abortion in the event of an unwed pregnancy, or what. At any rate, a pregnancy would be the consequence of pre-marital sex but not a punishment by any means. Life is always a gift from God and a baby is always a blessing.
Consequences. What areas in my life demand that I think about my actions and their consequences? "What's going to happen?"
Lack of time spent in God's Word: a void in my spiritual life
Lack of time spent in prayer: a power-outage in my Christian life
Lack of personal witnessing: someone may never hear the Gospel and go to Hell.
Lack of faithfulness in church attendance: my heart grows cold
Lack of time devoted to my husband: we grow apart
Lack of discipline in eating: these extra pounds bring on lots of physical problems
Lack of discipline in exercise: my body grows weak
Lack of fellowship with my friends: friendships become distant
Lack of consistency in keeping house: it becomes messy
Lack of regularity in feeding my cat: he becomes malnourished and sickly
Lack of timeliness in paying our bills: our credit suffers
WOW Jaden, you have given your Grandma much food for thought. "What's Going to Happen?" Out of the mouths of babes!
